Three things happened that got us to where we are today in regard to the political climate: Firstly, the assassination of JFK and whether you are a conspiracy theorist or not, no one can deny the impact to office that the most guarded man in America was reachable and therefore influences whether underworld or lobbyists etc. could have access to a more open President thereafter which was and is a talking point of political corruption not only with the current administration but every administration since JFK with perhaps the exception of Carter albeit there are even a few rumors about those under Carter. Secondly, this professor is very correct in that the beliefs of the two major parties began to change and the party which once believed in small government then became the big government platform while the other moved from big government to small government. There are some in the Republican party now who are considered more liberal and some in the Democratic party who are considered more conservative although this varies from each politician depending on several key factors which unfortunately include selling their votes for favors and profit to special interests. The third and biggest change which polarized the American public was media. When Ted Turner released CNN, he did so thinking many Americans would enjoy having the news accessible to them 24/7. He was right and his network soared during it's infancy. Rupert Murdock, an Australian media mogul billionaire tycoon then released Fox and Fox News and around the same time NBC, CBS, and ABC were all bought out by major corporations. Funny side note; Bill Cosby had tried to acquire NBC if I'm not mistaken with some private investors during this time for a lot less than I would have thought a major network would have sold for. This power struggle between the two major parties along with the corporations that have incredible influence not only in Washington but because of political agendas becoming the focus of all major news and media outlets also over the American public with a form of propagandize brainwashing has led us to being a subjugated and controllable divided people who once upon a time just wanted to live in the greatest country in the world, free from tyranny and oppression, to raise family and be given the means to provide for that family and to own and protect property to better that family's circumstance without causing hurt to anyone else. I saw the death of democracy with curious recounts and propped up candidates who had no chance of winning a coin toss let alone an election where one candidate had resources that seemed endless while others were forced out of elections before the big day due to a lack of fundraising. It takes a rich man with even richer men behind him who run wealthy corporations to even run for the office, while the interests of the majority are ignored. I've never seen "The Donald" standing in the welfare line to see how a single mother provides for her children or coming out of a mine to see how the coal miner sacrifices his health to provide for his family. I've never seen most of the politicians ever do anything really impactful for our country with the exception of a few like John Lewis who marched with Dr. King. We tend to believe whomever we watch on television and now we have the internet to sway us this way and that. We are a fickle and indoctrinated group with a mob mentality which makes us susceptible to controlling forces. If you don't think they are using you just watch the commercials on each channel. They use visuals that promote sex in some markets to sell a hamburger and in more conservative places they do it more subtly while in other more progressive places they may show a same sex couple to promote the enjoyment their products bring. Politics is not only no exception but is in fact the culmination of this practice into the art it has become. Over 300 million divided into race, sex, religious beliefs, sexual preference, and political party. It's no wonder we can't get potholes fixed where I live, we can't agree on how to mix the blacktop. United we stand, divided we fall. After 911 we united as Americans. We felt personally attacked all over the country. Why can't we be united in all things? Why can't we find the right person for the job and put them under scrutiny with polygraph and any other investigative procedures, after all they are applying for the most important job in the country. Why do we even have elections? Money driving elections where only two parties who are both controlled by the same seven headed beast, where could we go wrong? They all lie, they all tell you what they think you want to hear. Just once I'd like to have a politician answer a question directly. Won't see it in my lifetime but I have hope that the country will continue to prosper while my children and my children's children strive to thrive. Now there's a slogan for a sign in your yard: Vote Johnson and Strive to Thrive. Just a thought. Thanks for reading.
Oh they didn’t know the half of it then
We need a centrist party, and term limits.
So basically, the conservatives/racists moved fron the Democrats to Republican because they were racists, forming todays Racistpublican party filled with Neo Nazis and Klansman, and self hating minorities who wish they were white
A major part of the problem is that people today shop for slanted news outlets that reinforce what they want to believe. The echo chambers explain much of the problem!
The solution to polarization is to have more than 2 political parties in America, which have influence. With more than 2 parties, it would be hard for polarization, and people would focus more on policies, versus what team they are on.
It's only polarized at the grass roots through irrelevant wedge issues, especially between secular and religious minded people…though every major facet of our countries infrastructure, from both monetary and foreign policy, both parties are in lockstep with each other..at great detriment to the wealth an liberties of the American people. We live under a ONE party system with two personalities of style rather than a two party system that offers any real choice. Bait and switch. That's all.
Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for!
